To be followed by a PC version later this month.
In the hands of Ubisoft, there's no doubt that the Tom Clancy brand has expanded well beyond his books and the occasional movie. (In fact, one almost has to wonder why they even bother to use the label anymore, but that's a discussion for another time.) What started as a bit of creative license applied to some of the titles and characters the author once set to paper has gone on to inspire countless imitators, leading the French publisher to broaden its horizons and, in the scope of the games, quite literally look to the future. It would be far to say, I think, that some of the bigger changes have occurred this console generation, giving us a number of high tech games, from last year's voice-controlled EndWar to the aerial action game H.A.W.X., which Ubisoft today announced has shipped for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3; a PC version is due out next week. Taking place in the year 2021, H.A.W.X. – an acronym for High Altitude Warfare eXperimental squadron – is a futuristic dogfighting game in which most governments and armies have given way to mercenary-like private military companies. After one such group attacks the United States, the world seems on the brink of a global conflict and you take to the skies as a member of the Air Force, flying a variety of advanced aircraft to face this new threat. While it can be enjoyed alone, the title also features a multiplayer aspect, including four-person co-operative play in addition to the usual deathmatch-style competitive modes. SAN FRANCISCO – March 5, 2009 – Today Ubisoft announces that Tom Clancy’s HAWX for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system has released and will be hitting retail shelves this week.
"Tom Clancy’s HAWX marks a new era for the flight combat genre and a new playground in the Tom Clancy universe," said Tony Key, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Ubisoft. "Ubisoft is bringing advanced warfare to the unfriendly skies and a revolutionary new experience to gamers."
The setting for Tom Clancy’s HAWX is 2012. As the era of the nation-state draws quickly to a close, the rules of warfare evolve even more rapidly. More and more nations become increasingly dependent on Private Military Firms (PMFs) – elite mercenaries with a lax view of the law. The Reykjavik Accords further legitimize their existence by authorizing their right to serve in every aspect of military operations. There goes the neighborhood…
Tom Clancy’s HAWX allows the player to become an elite pilot of the future; and provides a revolutionary way to think about combat in the sky. Cutting-edge technology, devastating firepower, and intense dogfights bestow this new title a deserving place in the prestigious Tom Clancy franchise.
Key features of Tom Clancy’s HAWX:
- ENHANCED REALITY SYSTEM (E.R.S.) – E.R.S. is in-game technology that helps turn novice aviators into elite pilots of the future. The Enhanced Reality System is the backbone of your flight experience: radars and incoming missile detection, damage control system, tactical map and information relay, and weapons trajectory control. E.R.S. also allows you to issue orders to your squadron, making this system as iconic to Tom Clancy’s HAWX as the Cross-Com system is to Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter®.
- DUAL GAMEPLAY – Want to ease into your flight missions and gain a level of comfort? Turn on the assistance mode and take full advantage of your E.R.S. Need to evade your enemy and execute advanced dog-fighting moves? Switch off the assistance mode and feel the adrenaline rushing through your veins as you play in stunning 3rd-person views.
- INNOVATION IN MULTIPLAYER – For the first time ever in the Air Combat genre, experience the entire solo campaign in 4-player JUMP IN/JUMP OUT co-op mode. In PVP mode, challenge your friends in intense 8-player Team Deathmatch and find out who's the top gun.
- REALISM AND AUTHENTICITY – Take the throttle of over fifty of the world’s most famous aircrafts. Dogfight over real U.S. and international cities and landscapes. Tom Clancy’s HAWX utilizes the most advanced satellite mapping technology commercially available – so go supersonic with its authenticity and breathtaking graphics.
Tom Clancy’s HAWX is rated "T" for teen and has an MSRP of $59.99.
